ICT Country Case Studies (2000-2004)

A series of national telecommunication market reports has been compiled as part of the Internet Case Studies project. The project, which ran between 2000 and 2004, studied the diffusion of the Internet in over 20 nations across the world. The reports provide a comprehensive review of a nation's telecommunication and mass media industries as well as the use of ICTs in different sectors of the economy such as government, education, business and health. The reports also provide a framework for analyzing the development of the Internet that pinpoint a country's relative strengths and weaknesses, and recommendations for accelerating Internet development. In 2004, two case studies on the best practices of collecting, using, and disseminating ICT data and statistical information were carried out. Specifically, the case studies (Hong Kong, China and Australia) examined the role of different government agencies in the definition, collection, use and dissemination of ICT statistics, and looked at the ways in which they interact/cooperate with the national statistical office. It further identified in how far a country's policy makers are using national ICT statistics to formulate and adapt policies that directly or indirectly impact ICT usage.
