A workshop on The Internet in South East Asia
was held in
Bangkok, Thailand, from 21 to 23 November 2001. The event was organized by
the International Telecommunication Union (ITU),
hosted by the Post and Telegraph
Department of Thailand (PTD) and supported by the Communications
Authority of Thailand (CAT), the National
Electronics and Computer Technology Center (NECTEC) and the Telephone
Organization of Thailand (TOT). The workshop presented and
discussed the results of the ITU Internet Case Studies carried out in
the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2001. Comparative
results were presented for Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao P.D.R.,
Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam. To access these

The objective of the workshop was to understand the factors that
help to accelerate, or which may retard, the development of the
Internet in countries at different stages of economic and social
development. The workshop was primarily aimed at policy and
regulatory staff responsible for Internet development in their
countries. Others interested participants include
telecom operators, ISPs, national statistics agencies and market
researchers and information technology companies.
The workshop covered a variety of Internet-related issues,
including Internet Policy and Regulatory Issues, Users and Usages of
the Internet, Commercial Aspects of the Internet and Internet
