Disinfodemics During Covid-19 Era: Digital Literacy Movement as a Tool in Tackling Hoax Related to Covid-19 for Shaping a Resilient Society

Covid-19 pandemic is not only related to the spread of the virus from one human to another. In fact, this outbreak is followed by an extremely hazardous phenomenon, namely the massive spread of inaccurate and fake (hoax) information about Covid-19, also known as Infodemic. This session aims to present a current situation about the spreading of Covid-19 Infodemic in Indonesia, and the actions taken by government and stakeholders on addressing this issue. Also, this workshop proposed to be a sharing platform between countries across the globe in order to discover an effective strategy to combat the covid-19 Infodemic.

Is a Bachelor of Law from Gadjah Mada University and Master of Law from University of California Berkeley. He is currently serving as Senior Assistant for Special Advisor to the Minister of Communication and Informatics for Digital Policy and Human Resource.


Supriyaa Bezbaruah Ph.D.
Supriyaa Bezbaruah Ph.D. Piblic Health Risk Communication Specialist World Health Organization

Madame Bezbaruah has over 16 years of experience working on global health security, immunization and child health, biotechnology, involving policy research, and risk communication strategy development, implementation, and capacity building. She is currently consults for the World Health Organization (WHO). Prior to that, Madame Bezbaruah was a Senior Director for Global Health Strategies, she led projects in India and South-East Asia on policy-advocacy for immunization. She has a PhD in molecular cell biology from University College, University of London.


Septiaji Eko Nugroho
Septiaji Eko Nugroho Chairman MAFINDO, Masyarakat Anti Fitnah Indonesia, Indonesia

Septiaji Eko Nugroho is the Chairman and Founder of MAFINDO (Masyarakat Anti Fitnah Indonesia), an Anti Hoax Community of Indonesia. MAFINDO has been working in combating mis/disinformation in the digital platform since 2016 with 500 volunteers from 17 cities across Indonesia. Mr. Nugroho is also an invited speakers at seminars and media events.


Rizky Ika Syafitri Communication for Development Specialist and Public Communication Team UNICEF and KPCPEN, Indonesia

Riky Ika Syafitri is a behavior-change expert with extensive knowledge and experience in humanitarian work communications and advocacies. A strong spokesperson with vast areas of expertise that ranges from but not limited to outbreak response and immunization, Water and Sanitation (WASH), Nutrition, HIV/AIDS, poverty reduction, public communication, communication strategy, interpersonal communication. She is a Communication for Development Specialist at UNICEF Indonesia and a member of KPCPEN’s Public Communication Team.


Dr. Ir. Bonifasius Wahyu Pujianto, M.Eng
Dr. Ir. Bonifasius Wahyu Pujianto, M.Eng Director of Informatics Empowerment Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Indonesia

Mr. Bonifasius Wahyu Pujianto obtained his Doctoral Degree in IT Technology Program at KAIST University, South Korea. Prior, he worked for Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Information Technology and responsible for e‐Government implementation, particularly on E‐Government Application. Several achievements on Government projects has been received such as design and implementation safe and secure internet program, establishing Presidential Instruction on e‐Government, setting up several e‐Government standard, etc. He is also active in several international co‐operations and member of international working group such as ApecTel WG on E‐Government, WSIS (Indonesia committee member), ITU, Open e‐Governance Forum, Korea Indonesia Cooperation projects, and many others.

Our thematic workshop "Disinfodemic During Covid-19 Era: Digital Literacy Movement as a Tool in Tackling Hoax Related to Covid-19 for Shaping a Resilient Society" will focus on digital literacy as an attempt to overcome the spreading of Covid-19 infodemic in Indonesia. The massive digital literacy movement we do is hoped to build and enhance Indonesia’s people critical thinking capacity, so they could differentiate and identify hoax related to Covid-19 in specific, and think critically about any information they encounter online in general (Action Lines C4, Capacity Building). Furthermore, this thematic workshop highlight the important of digital ethics understanding in combating hoax on social media platform. Therefore, our thematic workshop perfectly in line with  WSIS Action lines on C4 (Capacity Building) , C9 (Media), and C10 (Ethics).

The presence of Infodemic has reflects the use of ICT during this pandemic is tremendously contradict with the real role of ICT on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) No. 16 about Peace & Justice. According to SDGs Goal No. 16, ICT plays a very critical role in disseminating accurate information to determine the response of authority. Hence, in order to putting back the role of ICTs in the era of pandemic, Indonesian government take immediate action through the presence of our Thematic Workshop "Disinfodemic During Covid-19 Era: Digital Literacy Movement as a Tool in Tackling Hoax Related to Covid-19 for Shaping a Resilient Society" which will discuss on how digital literacy can be an effective tool to equip people with the right ICT knowledge and skills, in order to reach the goal of ICT on SDGs No. 16 (disseminating accurate information to determine the response of authority during the emergency situation).
