Geneva, 6 June 2005 - The High Level Regional Conference in preparation for the Tunis phase of the World Summit on the Information Society will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 8-10 June 2005.
It will provide an opportunity for representatives of Latin America and the Caribbean to approve a Regional Declaration oriented towards sustainable development, digital inclusion and regional solidarity, and to formulate a Regional Action Plan focusing on initiatives and concrete activities as well as measurable goals based on the WSIS Plan of Action.
Concurrently, seminars will be organized enlisting multi-stakeholder participation from civil society, academia and the private sector on topics of relevance for building the Information Society.
Discussions are expected to focus on the following topics:
- Digital inclusion and development
- Reduction of inter-connection costs on the Internet
- Free and open source software
- Internet governance
- Financing mechanisms and the Digital Solidarity Fund
- E-government
The WSIS Regional Conference is organized jointly by the Government of Brazil and the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean
