Résumé :

This contribution was initially intended for Question 1/1 and Question 5/1 from the previous study period, which corresponds to Question 1/1 for the 2026-2029 study period.
The project "Deployment and operation of internet access networks in the southern region" is a key initiative within the programme "Improving connectivity for digital transformation in the Dominican Republic", led by INDOTEL since 2021. With USD 19.3 million in funding, financed by the IDB, the project seeks to close the digital divide in the country's most disadvantaged communities. To this end, fibre-optic networks have been deployed in 23 municipalities and 46 municipal districts, benefiting 202 470 inhabitants and 30 774 vulnerable households by making available a 30 Mbps plan for only RD$ 299 (five US dollars). In addition, 343 essential public institutions will be given free 50 Mbps/25 Mbps connections, strengthening community services. This digital infrastructure guarantees affordable and quality access, promoting equity and sustainable development in nine provinces in the southern region of the country. With this expansion, the country reaches full fibre-optic coverage in all its municipalities. The social and economic impact is significant. Digital inclusion: it connects marginalized communities, facilitating online education, telemedicine, and access to government services. Local development: it promotes entrepreneurship, SME competitiveness and financial inclusion through e-commerce and digital banking. Modernization of public services: it makes education, health and safety more effective thanks to stable and free connectivity.
