This contribution provides a brief overview of vehicle communication systems (V2X) as a cornerstone of digital transformation of transportation in smart sustainable cities and communities. V2X covers both localized, short-range communications as well as longer-range connectivity to public networks. In its evolution, V2X is enabled by integrated, multi-access edge computing (MEC), which has emerged as a critical enabler of low-latency and computation intensive V2X applications by offloading tasks from vehicles to nearby edge servers instead of faraway cloud servers. Of particular importance is the need to ensure that resources are efficiently allocated and latency deadlines are actually met, particularly for safety-critical V2X applications. This contribution aims to provide a reference for Member States to harmonize infrastructure deployment and promote interoperability in Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS).
