This document presents recent developments in aerial communication technologies with potential applications to disaster recovery, including a Disaster Relief Unit (DRU) developed through commissioned research under the Innovative Information and Communications Technology/Beyond 5G (6G) Fund Project implemented by the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT). The DRU is designed to support rapid restoration of connectivity when terrestrial infrastructure is damaged or access routes are disrupted. The contribution presents results from a field demonstration conducted in Japan and considers how the technologies and operational experience gained may inform future applications of High Altitude Platform Stations (HAPS) for disaster recovery.
