 Quality of life – An improvement in the quality of life of a city's inhabitants or populace.

The above dimensions can be reclassified into four overarching pillars incorporating the different
attributes (illustrated in the outer ring of Figure 2):
 Economy – The city must be able to thrive – e.g. jobs, growth, and finance.
 Governance – The city must be robust in its ability to administer policies and pull together the
different elements.

 Environment – The city must be sustainable in its functioning for future generations.
 Society – The city is for its inhabitants (the citizens).

The above four pillars are enabled through a series of physical and service infrastructures which
form a city's lifeline including (but are not limited to):
 Real estate and buildings

 Industry and manufacturing
 Utilities/energy
 Waste, water and air management
 Physical safety and security

 Health care
 Education

 Mobility
