              Definition /      Percentage of inhabitants with accessibility to green areas
              Description

              Rationale /       Green areas are important to the sustainability of a city. The benefits of green
              Interpretation /   spaces include capturing pollutants, reducing the “heat island” effect and
              Benchmarking      providing recreational spaces. Green spaces can include parks, gardens,
                                recreational areas, natural areas or other open green spaces.
                                However, it is also important to note whether city inhabitants have ready access to
                                these spaces as such spaces lead to a higher quality of life for the city’s inhabitants.
                                An improving trend and higher values are considered positive.

              Methodology       Calculate as:
                                Numerator: Number of inhabitants living with 300m of a publicly accessible green
                                space of at least 0.5ha.
                                Denominator: Total number of city inhabitants.
                                Multiply by 100.

              Data Sources      Data may be obtained from municipal parks and recreation departments, planning
              / Relevant        departments, aerial surveys or GIS data overlaid with population data or maps.
