ITU leads the new and emerging area of smart sustainable cities through ITU-T Study Group 20
Internet of Things (IoT) and smart cities and communities (SG20), where representatives of
the ITU-T membership develop Recommendations (standards) that leverage IoT technologies to
address urban-development challenges. 3
Alternate channels called Focus Groups (FG-AI4AD, FG-AI4H and FG-AI4NDM) are also created
in response to immediate ICT standardization demands; these are open to organizations outside
ITU’s membership and are afforded flexibility in their working methods. 4

To complement this standardization work, initiatives with other UN agencies such as the United
for Smart Sustainable Cities (U4SSC), aim to address the needs of cities to become smarter and
more sustainable, and to support the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
