Another important contribution is the proposed set of sub-indicators for the country, which
will make it possible to widen the reporting of indicator 12.5.1 “National recycling rate, in tons
of recycled material” of SDG 12 target 12.5 by incorporating WEEE. This information may be
integrated into the next National Voluntary Report on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.
This progress may boost options for funding from cooperant donors to support high-quality
management and the efforts to meet the SDGs.
The country's knowledge about the WEEE managers’ situation regarding the implementation
of the management systems will allow a plan to be developed according to INTE G8:2013
standard “Integrated management system for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)
Requirements with guidance for its use” and will provide support to SME-type waste managers.
This will allow compliance with the Protocol of Accession of Costa Rica to the Organisation for
Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)
It is important to highlight that the country must strengthen open-data policies to ensure national
system sustainability, its permanent update, and the reporting requested by international
organizations. The information generated will enable an updated inventory to be kept, and
will also fulfil the reporting deadlines on sub-indicators proposed for SDG 12 and to achieve
ITU Connect 2030 Agenda sustainability targets.
