ITU Journal: ICT Discoveries, Vol. 2(1), December 2019
Editor-in-Chief's message
The ITU Journal: ICT Discoveries is a prime example of
how ITU and academia can work together towards a
shared goal, through research and publication. This
collaborative effort is of mutual benefit to ITU and
academia, offering research communities the chance to
influence the decisions of thought leaders in the public
and private sector.
Advances in radiowave propagation make a key
contribution to the efficient use of the radio-frequency
spectrum. This third special issue tackles an issue of
critical importance to the development of the global ICT
ecosystem.
In this issue of the ITU Journal, we find papers on topics
including a comparison of site diversity experiments
between Greece and the United Kingdom at Ka band,
frequency band jamming in Paris, directional antenna channel modelling in urban areas using ray
tracing, and channel models for future networks and IMT-2020/5G systems.
21 papers were submitted and underwent an extensive, single-blind review process, resulting in a
publication offering a global view on radiowave propagation.
I would like to thank ITU Secretary-General Houlin Zhao for entrusting me with the role of ITU Journal
Editor-in-Chief. I would also like to thank Chaesub Lee, Director of the ITU Telecommunication
Standardization Bureau, for the support that I have received from his bureau, in particular the ITU
Journal’s editorial team.
I express my gratitude to all of our authors for their valuable contributions to this third special issue.
I am also grateful to the many reviewers that ensured an efficient review process as well as our Guest
Editors, Christopher R. Anderson, United States Naval Academy; Leke Lin, China Research Institute
of Radio Wave Propagation; Carlo Riva, Politecnico di Milano; Sana Salous, Durham University; and
Zhen-Wei Zhao, China Research Institute of Radio Wave Propagation.
For their continued support to the ITU Journal, I would like to thank our Associate Editors-in-Chief,
Rajkumar Buyya, University of Melbourne; Jun Kyun Choi, Korea Advanced Institute of Technology;
Xiaolin Fu, University of Oxford; Mostafa Hashem Sherif; as well as our Outreach Chairman, Stephen
Ibaraki.
The fourth special issue of the ITU Journal will address the ‘future of video and immersive media’. We
can look forward to papers highlighting the state of the art in multimedia as well as the new possibilities
and associated challenges appearing on the horizon.
