United for Smart U4SSC
Sustainable Cities
The ITU and the UNECE launched the “United
for Smart Sustainable Cities” (U4SSC) in response
to SDG 11: “Make cities and human settlements
inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable” in May 2016.
United for Smart Sustainable Cities (U4SSC) is a global smart sustainable city initiative
which provides an international platform for information exchange, knowledge
sharing and partnership building, with the aim of formulating strategic guidance
to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and implement the New
Urban Agenda and other international agreements. Along with ITU and UNECE,
14 other United Nations agencies, programmes, funds and secretariats including
the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Food and
Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations
Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN-Women), the
United Nations Commission for Africa (UNECA), the Economic Commission for
Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the Secretariat of the United Nations
Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the United Nations Human
Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), the United Nations Environment Programme
(UNEP), the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP-FI),

Part of the work of the U4SSC focuses on accelerating job creation by enabling
new business opportunities. The U4SSC also aims to encourage the creation of
small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in smart sustainable cities through the
adoption of appropriate policies and inclusion of innovative technologies including
Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain, and artificial intelligence (AI).
