h. Smart education

Education is a crucial component of smart city services. In the long run, education may be the most
important smart city service of all, for adults as well as for children. As the world rapidly globalizes,
one of the only ways to stay competitive is to develop and continue to build knowledge‐based skills
via education. This includes initial knowledge (e.g. through school, vocational and university
education) as well as lifelong learning. The role of schools and universities is therefore a key element
to consider in the design of smart education solutions. While there are many examples of how ICT
                                                                                  47
can positively impact education, the following figure adapted from Intel summarizes some of the
key contributions of ICT tools to education.
