Title of Presentation: Solutions for MM communications on the move: NTT DoComo vision

Since late 1990s, market environment of the Japanese telematics industry has been dramatically impacted by the two main factors: Rapid progress of mobile phone services and car-navigation systems technology. As represented by DoCoMo’s i-mode, mobile phone has changed from just a communication tool to a sophisticated information terminal and a necessity of daily life. As for car-navigation systems, more than 10 million units are already in the market and their technological features keep advancing, such as HDD and bluetooth functions.

Based on the market characteristics in Japan, as a leading wireless operator, NTT DoCoMo is developing various services for telematics, with taking advantage of its strong market position and expertise in wireless communications technology.

With my presentation, the following topics will be addressed:
  • Market characteristics of mobile phone services/wireless technology and car-navigation systems in Japan
  • NTT DoCoMo’s telematics strategies
  • Integrated service examples of car-navigation systems and communication terminals (mobile phones, embedded modules)
  • Issues and lessons for flourishing telematics services
  • Consideration of Standardization for Telematics
