Cooperative Communication Systems |
|
Automotive communication systems have had a very rapid development in recent years. These systems are currently characterised that they are dedicated to the applications, and vertically integrated as “one antenna – one application – one box”. This is a generalisation but close to the truth. This situation gives several drawbacks for all actors: Limited interoperability, difficult maintenance and upgradeability, high life-cycle cost.
ISO TC204 (ITS) started a programme to created new standards that will help in this. The CALM (Continuous Air-interface for Long and Medium range) set of standards are intended to give a solution to this situation.
The idea is to isolate the applications environment from the communications stack, and provide a seamless communications service using several communication medias. The standards include management functions to facilitate handover between medias and operators. As network layer CALM uses IPv6 which is the next generation Internet backbone protocol.
The presentation will focus on the concepts and current status of CALM, and give some information on recent developments in Europe.
