ICTs, including satellite monitoring, play a crucial role in earth monitoring, sharing climate and weather information, forecasting, and early warning systems. ICTs therefore enable both the global monitoring of climate change as well as strengthen resilience by helping mitigate the effects of climate change through forecasting and early warning systems.

Case study – Iran

In Iran, the University of Science and Technology has set up E-Science-Net to conduct expert surveys on e-Science and the role of science and technology in the building and sustainable development of information and knowledge societies in different scientific subjects. The project aims to build an information network of researchers located in universities across Iran and abroad to exchange new and innovative ideas in scientific areas including agriculture, climate change, and disaster risk reduction. E-Science-Net allows participating researchers, universities professors, and students in the network to exchange ideas and scientific information through a web-based platform, and to publish their work online.

Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts*

13.1 Strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters in all countries.
13.2 Integrate climate change measures into national policies, strategies and planning.
13.3 Improve education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning.
13.a Implement the commitment undertaken by developed-country parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to a goal of mobilizing jointly $100 billion annually by 2020 from all sources to address the needs of developing countries in the context of meaningful mitigation actions and transparency on implementation and fully operationalize the Green Climate Fund through its capitalization as soon as possible.
13.b Promote mechanisms for raising capacity for effective climate change-related planning and management in least developed countries and small island developing States, including focusing on women, youth and local and marginalized communities.

intergovernmental forum for negotiating the global response to climate change.
