Shaping Tomorrow's Networks Programme

Shaping Tomorrow's Networks Programme (STN) Home page

Information and Communication Technology is a critical and important component of peoples’ lifestyle and is a fundamental enabler of the global economy.

During the past years the development of telecommunication systems and the rapid growth of Internet has brought with it the concept of a framework, which would enable people to access and exchange information freely, at any time, from anywhere, and from any appliance.

Tomorrow's Networks will have a deep impact on the lifestyle of millions of people and businesses around the world.....

The STN Programme
The ITU Strategy and Policy Unit, in collaboration with the European Broadcasting Union(EBU), Ugo Bordoni Foundation (FUB), the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP INFO/RAC-MAP) have formed a multi-stakeholder partnership entitled "Shaping Tomorrow's Networks (STN)” as one of a series of follow-up initiatives to the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS).

The vision of STN is to act as catalyst to promote the concept of global connectivity and to facilitate the usage of ICT, through the universal, ubiquitous, non discriminatory access to the information, aiming to encourage the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) as a way to promote development and bridge the digital divide.

Deliverables of the STN activities to be used to support the work of the sectors in assisting the Member States. Specific focus would be given to developing and least developed countries.

STN makes use of the concept of digital convergence to examine future challenges in developing policies and provide forecast on the future possible scenarios of the ICT sector

Through analytical studies on the evolution of ICT sector, STN can identify new strategic areas of interest for its partners and ITU future activities.

Through the organization of High Level Experts’ Meetings, STN will identify solutions and challenges to support the work of its partners and the ITU Sectors

Partnerships are the cornerstone of ICT development

Representation of the entire ICT sector: The Shaping Tomorrow’s Networks Programme is an open, multi-stakeholder initiative that benefits from the active participation of governments, the private sector, international organizations and civil society.

A unique opportunity: STN capitalizes on the strengths of its diverse membership by building a coalition that is greater than the sum of its parts.

A neutral forum: It is a global partnership for members to share ideas, experiences and best practices. This will facilitate the identification and creation of new opportunities.

Equal status among partners: Each STN partner contributes according to its individual circumstance and capacity.
