Summary Goodwill Ambassadors are prominent individuals who agree to lend their name and volunteer for a cause, activity, or programme, and are committed to contribute to an organization's efforts, generally by engaging in public advocacy and awareness activities. Council 2015 proposed that the Secretariat conduct a study on the feasibility of formalizing a Goodwill Ambassador Programme at ITU, without entailing any financial implications for the Union. Councillors agreed that such a programme could help to increase the visibility of ITU and improve its image, with some Councillors noting that the appointment of high-profile personalities might even help to generate funds, particularly for projects in the least developed countries (LDCs). The importance of engaging more women in information and communication technologies (ICTs) was highlighted and it was suggested that, should the programme go ahead, consideration might be given to an appointment relating to a gender perspective in ICTs.
