About the cover story
The name Timbuktu may still conjure up the image of mythical remoteness. Yet,
this historic crossroads for the nomads on the edge of the Sahara, some 500
kilometres north-east of Mali’s capital, Bamako, is slowly; but surely,
joining the global information society. Timbuktu is the site of the first major
multipurpose community telecentre in Africa to be funded by ITU in partnership
with others. Similar pilot projects are being implemented in different
developing regions of the world to provide community access to information and
communication technologies to people who would otherwise remain deprived of
them. A new Geneva-based grassroots initiative of the ITU, the United Nations
High Commissioner for Refugees and the International Golf Associates
Franco-Suisse Chapter proposes to establish the first telecentre in Kabul to
help meet some of the health, education, information and communication needs of
Afghan communities.
