For the first time since the inception of the TELECOM event in 1971, the ITU has dedicated a stand at the exhibition to promote the ways in which traditional telecommunications facilities and appliances can improve the quality of life of people with disabilities and the elderly. In developing the stand, ITU TELECOM has been greatly assisted by a number of organizations. COST 219, a group concerned with the provision of telecommunications and teleinformatics facilities for people with disabilities and the elderly, has provided important collaboration on the project. And a selection of exhibitors at TELECOM 95, and other experts within the field, have provided a wide range of both low and high-tech telecommunications equipment, free of charge, for display on the stand. Further assistance has been provided by EXPO-POOL Sarl, Mr G. L. Franco (Programme Director and Editor, TELECOM 95 World Communications book), and ORGEXPO (managers of PALEXPO).
The stand, which is presented in the form of a "Smart House", bears the name 1 in 10. This reflects the number of people suffering from a disability of some sort. Representing a worldwide population of some 500 million, these people have previously been dependent on social welfare.
The "Smart House" shows a home of tomorrow, on display today. It features a living room, dining room, kitchen, bathroom, study and service area. Each room is fully furnished, taking into consideration the basic requirements of a disabled or elderly occupant, and features a range of commercially available assistive technologies and equipment designed to reduce barriers for the elderly and the disabled. Everything - from low-tech kitchen implements to high-tech videoconferencing facilities, or from the most functional wheelchair to the most advanced multimedia workstation - is on display here.
The "Smart House" can be seen at the 1 in 10 Stand (Number 7.003) in the newly constructed Hall 7.
