FINAL CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

The theme of the Shanghai World Expo 2010 is: "Better City, Better Life" signifying the common wish of humankind for better living standards in future urban environments. Through different sub-themes, Expo 2010 will create blueprints for future cities and harmonious urban life styles, providing an extraordinary educational and entertaining platform for visitors of all nationalities.

ITU is working on many fronts to foster the use of green ICTs to reduce green house gases.

ICTs have an important role in urban sustainability. Smart buildings, smart grids to create greater energy efficiency, intelligent transport systems that can get our cities moving again, multimedia remote conferencing systems and teleworking technologies that will reduce travel.

Within the framework of the Shanghai World Expo 2010, ITU is organizing, in the UN Pavilion dedicated to "One Earth, One UN", a workshop entitled “ICTs: Building the green city of the future”, to be held on 14 May 2010, and aimed at capturing student visions of ICTs role in providing for urban sustainability.

The workshop is calling for original academic presentations offering innovative approaches addressing this challenge and a prize fund totaling $10,000 will be awarded to the three best presentations.


Objectives

ICTs: Building the green city of the future is an event organized within the framework of ITU Kaleidoscope activities (http://www.itu.int/ITU-T/uni/kaleidoscope), open to members and non members of ITU, general visitors of the Expo, students, experts and high level industry officials.

This workshop aims at increasing the dialogue between academia and experts working on the standardization of ICTs.

Submissions are encouraged by all, but especially young people, students, researchers and professors from universities and research institutions. They can cover any topic along these broad guidelines but should reflect the sessions listed below.


Abstracts topics guidelines
Authors are encouraged to submit abstracts with reference to the following topics provided as guidelines:
  • Session 1 (10:00 – 11:30): ICTs and the reduction of GHG emissions: Reducing the carbon footprint of the ICT sector (future networks, data centers, recycling) and using ICTs to reduce GHG emissions in other sectors (smart buildings, smart girds, dematerialization).
  • Session 2 (11:45 – 13:15): The role of universities in building the Smart Cities of the Future: Research and Development, pilot projects, e-learning, providing wired and wireless services to citizens, e-commerce, online entertainment, sensors.
  • Session 3 (14:15 – 15:45): Cars and Intelligent Transport Systems: Using ICTs to green the transport industry; C2C communications, better traffic management, smart fuels, privacy.
  • Session 4 (16:00 – 17:30): Climate Change: Key issues for the green cities of the future: using ICTs to improve social conditions, e-government and e-health, promoting safe environments and identifying new strategies to adapt to and mitigate climate change.
Deadline for submission of abstracts
Authors wishing to submit a proposal for a presentation should submit a one-page abstract, including the title of the presentation, the author’s full name, affiliation, a short biography, address, telephone and e-mail, to tsbworkshops[at]itu.int by 15 April 2010.
Acceptance Notification
Authors will be notified of the acceptance of their papers by 22 April 2010. The accepted presentations shall be submitted by 7 May 2010.
