Carlos Eduardo Yamasaki Sato, (University of Sussex, UK)
Carlos Eduardo Yamasaki Sato is a Lecturer in Management in SPRU (Science and Technology Policy Research)
at the University of Sussex, United Kingdom. He has 12 years of experience in the telecommunications
industry, working for multinational companies such as Siemens Communications and Furukawa. He holds a
BEng in Computer Systems Engineering from Aeronautics Institute of Technology (ITA-SP-Brazil); a
Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Networks and Distributed Systems from Pontifical University of Paraná
(PUC-PR-Brazil); a Postgraduate Diploma in Industrial Management from the Federal University of Paraná
(UFPR-Brazil); an Executive MBA in Project Management from Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV-PR-Brazil);
a Master Degree in Technology Management from Federal Technological University of Paraná (UTFPR-Brazil);
and is a PhD Candidate in Technology and Innovation Management in SPRU at the University of Sussex.

Taro Yoshikawa, NTT Intellectual Property Center
He received the B.E. and M.E. degrees in physics from the University of Tokyo, in 1990 and 1992,
respectively. He joined NTT Transmission Systems Laboratories in 1992, and studied optical access
network. In 2000, he moved to NTT EAST corporation and engaged in development of wireless LAN service
systems. In 2005, he qualified as a patent attorney. Since 2006, he has been working at the Patent
& Trademark Group of the Intellectual Property Center.

Huaiwen He, Peking University, China
Huaiwen He is a PhD candidate of Intellectual Property Law, studying in the Law School
of Peking University. As an experienced research assistant with his supervisor, he
participated in several research projects concerning Intellectual Property Rights (IPR),
including those dealing with the IPR issues in standardization. He is now a scholarship
holder of the Max Planck Institute for Intellectual Property, Competition and Tax Law in Munich.

Rob Frieden, Pennsylvania State University, USA
Rob Frieden serves as Pioneers Chair and Professor of Telecommunications and Law at Penn
State University. He also provides legal, management and market forecasting consultancy
services and has written several books, published over fifty articles in academic journals
and provided commentary in a variety of media. Professor Frieden updates a major communications
treatise: All About Cable (Law Journal Press) and has presented papers and moderated sessions
in numerous forums throughout the world.
Before accepting an academic appointment, Professor Frieden provided a broad range of business
development, strategic planning, policy analysis and regulatory functions for the IRIDIUM mobile
satellite venture.
Professor Frieden has held senior policy making positions in international telecommunications at
the United States Federal Communications Commission and the National Telecommunications and Information
Administration. In the private sector, he practiced law in Washington, D.C., and served as Assistant
General Counsel at PTAT System, Inc. where he handled corporate, transactional and regulatory issues
for the nation's first private undersea fiber optic cable company. Professor Frieden holds a B.A.,
with distinction, from the University of Pennsylvania (1977) and a J.D. from the University of Virginia (1980).
