Background
The ITU-T workshop on Software-Defined Networking (SDN) will take place at ITU Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, 4 June 2013, 16:45-19:00. The workshop is organized within the meeting of the ITU Telecommunication Standardization Advisory Group (TSAG), 4-7 June 2013, and is an excellent opportunity to present worldwide SDN standardization efforts to the ITU Membership.
Responding to WTSA-12 Resolution 77 - Standardization work in ITU-T for software defined networking, the workshop will assemble standardization experts to discuss progress in SDN standards-development efforts with a view to identifying the best approach to its coordination and future work.
SDN is a promising technology for the introduction and realization of network virtualization, and is of great interest to carrier networks including mobile, data-centre and enterprise networks. SDN allows network operators to make use of a centralized, programmable control-plane and data-plane abstraction, where control and data planes are separated; it gives operators the ability to control and manage virtualized resources and networks without requiring new hardware technologies.
SDN is considered a major shift in networking technology, challenging the traditional model of intelligence residing largely at the end point of the network (computers) with network equipment such as routers and switches mainly confined to reading addresses and transferring packets of data to adjacent systems. Decoupling the network control and data planes, SDN will reduce the increases in network complexity and management and operational costs commonly associated with the adoption and deployment of new services, technologies or hardware.
