Presentation Abstract
Title: How traveling and tourism are impacting on the rise of smart cities

Cities have long been experiencing environmental problems such as air, water and noise pollution, poor sanitation and in some places, poor housing. This long recognised problems persist in almost all cities, but they are also being added to other ones. It becomes apparent that urban problems are intimately tied up with the concerns of global environmental sustainability.

Tourism is one of the main excuses and actually a tool to think in new possibilities to improve inhabitants quality lives. In fact, the tourist destination that gets sustainability label by its environmental respect has more attraction for travellers, because nowadays, there are many people that prefer a quiet and relax place instead of a mass destination. Moreover, this tourist profile usually has a higher purchasing power, so the economic impact generated during their stay is in many cases more than triple that in overcrowded destinations. Getaria, a Spanish city, is an example of how having an environmental and sustainable commitment can have such a positive impact on tourism.
