Introduction
Cable broadband networks represent a key alternative for delivering content alongside satellite, cable broadcast, as well as telecommunication broadband networks. The cable industry though is a competitor of the telecommunications networks that can deliver high-quality IP video services to their subscribers alongside voice and data as well as hybrid satellite and broadband networks. The primary advantage of IP broadband over DVB-C broadcast is that it can offer advanced video on demand (VOD), Cloud digital video recorder (DVR) and Timeshifting services to a multitude of heterogeneous devices as well as rich data-driven user interface experiences such as advanced personalized recommendations and search. The standardization work and reciprocal collaboration from various stakeholders such as ITU-T SG9, US CableLabs and C‑DOCSIS, enables Integrated Broadband Cable Networks leveraging the customer experience of broadband and TV services internationally.

Some cable companies have managed to migrate from analog-based one-way video systems to full two-way high-speed IP-based broadband networks taking advantage of the new broadband services described above, however a large number of operators are just starting the migration. To realize the full potential of the multi-gigabit cable technology, one of the challenges of the operators is to consider an effective usage of their networks that carry television, voice, and other services. Also, Cable companies have to consider the balance between cloud-based services for content encoding, storage and distribution alongside on-premises equipment and management systems. Choosing the right balance is complex and dependent on local factors, often unique to the Cable company, as well as a need to improve the efficiency, reduce the costs and optimize the capacity.

Experts from ITU-T SG9 shared their views at the “Future of Cable TV for Asia & Pacific” workshop.
Simultaneous interpretation ( English/Chinese) was made available.

Objectives
The future of the cable industry is evolving, therefore it is very important to answer the following questions:

Target Audience
This workshop was addressed to companies that have successfully migrated to full digital solutions with two-way cable TV solutions and integrated high-speed broadband. Speakers discussed  their plans as they start to integrate cloud-based solutions into their operating environment and clarify why certain technology choices have been made. In this workshop, companies also described the philosophies and methodologies on creating an efficient modern pay TV cloud-based architecture that takes full advantage of the benefits that a public cloud offers and how this differs from the old, legacy on premises architecture.

Participation was free of charge and open to everybody, including governments, cable and telecom/ICT industries and associations, academia and research institutions, non ITU Members and individuals.
