Bringing young and talented people together is always inspiring! At the St. Petersburg Bonch-Bruevich University of Telecommunications (SPbSUT), the International Telecommunication Union held a series of trainings on the development and management of startups in telecommunications. The events took place on March 30-31, with trainers Anastasia Lagutik, consultant of ITU RO for CIS, and participants of the Generation connect for CIS Youth Group, ITU experts Yulia Tikhonova and Maxim Burianov.
On the first day of the event, more than 60 enthusiastic students attended the training to learn how to generate innovative ideas, build successful business models and attract investments for their telecom projects. Students also gained valuable knowledge on how to assess development metrics with the Startup KPIs tool and suggested their visions for future startups. During the first day of the event, 17 teams were established to convert their ideas into business models and project presentations. Eleven of them presented their ideas to a student audience and experts. Based on the results of student voting and expert selection, start-up ideas were selected in different categories, including "Best Sustainable Development Project", " Best Scale-Up Idea", "Best University-Based Project", "Best Science and Innovation Project", "Best Investment Project" and "Best Project according to Experts".
The second day of the training brought together more than 50 teachers who received valuable knowledge about startup evaluation and discussed the establishment of a "Startup Academy" on the basis of university. The professors were interested in successful examples of creating student startup programmes, the opportunities that now exist for students to obtain funding for startup projects, and the existing incubation and acceleration programmes for students. Alena Sherstneva, organizer of the school and student accelerator of SberStudent, shared her experience in creating an acceleration program for students.
It is worth noting that the Bonch-Bruevich St. Petersburg University of Telecommunications is an academic member of the ITU and actively participates in ITU activities. We hope that the conducted trainings will contribute to the formation of the student startup ecosystem of St. Petersburg State University of Telecommunications.
