GIRLS IN ICT DAY NEPAL 2025

BACKGROUND

Since 8 April 2011, the ITU has celebrated Girls in ICT Day annually on the fourth Thursday in April. This initiative promotes information and communication technologies (ICT) to young women and girls and encourages them to pursue careers in the field. Girls in ICT Day is now a global movement, with ITU partners and other organizations conducting their own events and celebrations on the Girls in ICT Day and throughout the year. To date, over 417,000 girls and young women have taken part in more than 11,590 celebrations of Girls in ICT Day in 175 countries worldwide.

In 2025, the International Girls in ICT Day was celebrated on 24 April under the theme “Girls in ICT for inclusive digital transformation". The global celebration was co-hosted by the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and the Arab States regions as a hybrid event, which featured a live link between Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, and Nouakchott, Mauritania, along with distinguished panellists from around the world, live-streamed for a global audience.

The ICT sector continues to expand globally, creating increasing opportunities for female students in technical fields. These opportunities are especially important for skilled girls and young women, who are still underrepresented in STEM education and careers. This makes it imperative to create programs and activities that encourage more girls to study STEM and ICT.

Girls in ICT Day Nepal 2025 was jointly organised by Nepal Telecom Authority with support from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Launched on 23 May 2025 in Kathmandu, the event aimed to introduce girls and young women to digital skills, enhance partnerships for scaling the initiative across Nepal, and foster collaboration among key stakeholders in the digital empowerment space.

The celebrations focused on increasing digital literacy and awareness among students and teachers, particularly encouraging girls' participation in ICT. The initiative also sought to strengthen collaboration among government ministries, industry stakeholders, development organizations, and UN agencies in advancing youth digital empowerment programmes.

A high-level inauguration ceremony at Hotel Himalaya launched the programme, setting an inspiring tone for the initiatives ahead. The event brought together key stakeholders, including the UN Resident Coordinator's Office, representatives from various government ministries, departments, and agencies, as well as teachers, students, girls, young women, persons with disabilities, and community members from remote locations across Nepal.

Following the official launch, a series of focused workshops and training programs were conducted between July and August 2025. These programs aimed to equip girls and young women—especially from marginalized communities—with employable digital skills and the confidence to excel in the evolving digital world.
