With the aim to develop innovative ICT enabled solutions for agriculture, food security, and addressing the SDGs, ITU has co-organized several hackathons in different regions with diverse stakeholder groups. The hackathon format embraces the complexity of challenges, as well as enabling the participants to identify practical interventions and approaches to address urgent issues. Hackathons provide a powerful tool to develop new solutions by bringing together actors from various fields – and increasing capacity for innovation.
In 2018, ITU, FAO and the Impact Hub Geneva organized an e-Agriculture Hackathon #HackAgainstHunger, as special track of the WSIS Forum 2018 – which built on three regional hackathons in Rwanda, the Caribbean and Egypt (2017). The #HackAgainstHunger brought together 73 participants, 14 teams across 4 continents to “hack” for a Future of Sustainable Agriculture and Food Solutions. The teams developed innovative digital services, mobile and web applications, mainly for middle- and lower income countries, based on algorithms as well as artificial intelligence.
