The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), in collaboration with the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) and the Environmental Affairs Department (EAD), is currently supporting the Government in developing a National e-waste Policy in Malawi.
A series of national consultations have been held in 2021, including both public and private sector, in order to define strategies relating to the roles, duties and responsibilities of actors involved in the e-waste value chain. A preliminary draft of the National Electrical and Electronic Equipment Waste Management Policy has been developed, following the feedback received during the national consultations, with the cooperation of a dedicated national task team – including MACRA, EAD, Ministry of Natural Resources, Energy and Environment, and the Ministry of Information, Communications and Technology – and ITU international and local experts.
Government Consultation Workshop in April 2021
The next steps in Malawi will be to finalize and validate the National e-waste Policy, and move forward into implementation, e.g. through the drafting of a dedicated e-waste Regulation, as well as raising awareness at national level on the issue of e-waste and Government’s actions.
