At the heart of the
2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
, are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries in a global partnership. ITU takes an active role in promoting and addressing the SDGs through the use of ICTs.
ICTs FOR SDGS
ICTs serve as catalysts for achieving all of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the UN Membership in 2015. Several of the SDGs are directly related to the environment and the climate. ITU actively promotes the achievement of the SDGs through its work by linking and incorporating the SDGs into its strategies, and by aligning its activities and actions, accordingly. ITU highlights the role that ICTs will play in achieving the SDGs and environmental sustainability, through ICT projects and activities in the area of environmental protection. Through this, ITU directly contributes to the implementation of Goals 7, 12 and 13 of the SDGs.
The Sustainable Development Goal 7 - Affordable and Clean Energy
The Sustainable Development Goal 12 - Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns
The Sustainable Development Goal 13 - Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

WEEE and SDGs
The way in which we produce, consume and dispose of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) is becoming unsustainable due to slow adoption of appropriate collection, recycling and disposal methods. This poses challenges to the environment, human health and ultimately the achievement of the SDGs.
The management of WEEE relates closely to numerous SDGs, such as good health and well-being (SDG 3), and decent work and economic growth (SDG 8). Monitoring of different WEEE streams can particularly help towards the progress of
SDG 11
sustainable cities and communities (target 11.6), and
SDG 12
responsible consumption and production (targets 12.4 and 12.5). Improving global understanding and environmentally sound management of WEEE will support international efforts to reach the SDGs, and to create a circular economy and more sustainable society.
