Background
Burundi developed a national policy for e-waste management, which was the first comprehensive policy on the topic in the country, aiming at an effective, equitable, and sustainable system that protected both human health and the environment while promoting socio-economic development.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) provided technical assistance to the Government of Burundi via the Ministère de la Communication, des Technologies de l’Information et des Médias (MCTIM) and the Agence de Régulation et Contrôle des Télécommunications (ARCT) by providing technical expertise and strengthening Burundi’s national capacity for e-waste management.

A series of in-depth consultation on the development of Burundi’s national e-waste management policy was organized in 2021 to define strategies related to the roles, duties and responsibilities of actors involved in the e-waste value chain. Following a similar consultation with Burundi’s public sector, this private sector consultation workshop focused on bringing together private sector representatives to hear their concerns and views towards a strong e-waste management value chain.

Objectives

The workshop brought together stakeholders from the private sector to consult towards the development of a national e-waste management policy for Burundi. The objectives of this consultation included:

  • Raising awareness among private sector stakeholders about e-waste issues and the process of developing an e-waste management policy, and obtain their opinions and recommendations on the subject;
  • Deepen understanding of current practices for e-waste management being developed in Burundi;
  • Building capacity of the private sector on key principles and guidance for a circular economy for e-waste management in Burundi;
  • Ensuring the active involvement of private sector participants in the successive stages of the process.
