from Rome to Durban (Part 1)
The Cancun Agreements adopted at COP-16 set all governments more firmly on the path towards a low-emissions future in turn supporting enhanced action on climate change in the developing world.
This High-Level Segment will set transparent policy objectives and targets to measure and improve governmental green ICT strategies, including ICT-enabled applications across the economy. It will provide panellists with an opportunity to exchange views on how ICTs can help in the implementation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Kyoto Protocol.

The generation of electricity is
responsible for about 40% of global CO2
emissions, presenting an enormous
opportunity for savings due to smart
grid/metering technologies. For example,
improving the efficiency of the U.S.
electricity grid by 5% would alone be
the equivalent of eliminating the fuel
use and carbon emissions of 53 million
cars.
In this context, the smart grid emerges
as a critical tool to address global
climate change.
The smart grid is an innovation that has
the potential to revolutionise the
transmission, distribution and
conservation of energy. It employs
digital technology to improve
transparency and to increase reliability
as well as efficiency. ICTs and
especially sensors and sensor networks
play a major role in turning traditional
grids into smart grids.

Climate Change
Adaptation refers to measures to address changes already occurring as a result of global warming. These changes have a negative impact on ecosystems and on human habitat affecting access to natural resources such as drinking water and farming.
ICTs have great potential and use in collecting, analyzing, planning and disseminating information on climate change. This session will look at how ICTs can help in adapting to the new environmental challenges, especially in developing countries with a special focus on the ITU project in Ghana.
