Brief Description
Digital television
offers many new opportunities for viewers: a larger selection of
programs; availability of those programs on multiple devices, including
mobile ones; much improved picture and audio quality; additional
features such as interactive services, Electronic Program Guide, etc.
Of equal importance
is the tremendous efficiency afforded by digital television systems to
radiofrequency spectrum, attributable to advanced digital compression
and modulation techniques. This efficiency makes a possible more
advanced digital broadcasting services, as well as the opportunity for
additional new services (e.g. broadband wireless services, additional
broadcasting services).
All these reasons attract not only the operators and content creators
into the arena of digital broadcasting but other players in the value
chain such as manufacturers. This would lead to in the future, an end to
the production of analogue television equipment (transmitters and
receivers). The Caribbean will therefore have to switch to digital
television before this stage is reached. There has been steady work done
across the Caribbean to consider the requirements for Digital
Switchover. However some jurisdictions are more advanced than others.
This transition itself requires a large degree of co-ordination and
cooperation between the various players in the broadcasting, telecom and
ICT sectors including administration, broadcasting operators, content
creators, manufacturers and viewers. And it is this cooperation that
will be a key factor to the development of a successful timetable for
transition.
This
2-day training workshop will lay emphasis on
providing
information that would assist in the planning process and facilitate
decision making on how best countries and organizations can prepare
themselves for transitioning to digital broadcasting.
