28 ITU‐T's Technical Reports and Specifications h. Smart education Education is a crucial component of smart city services. In the long run, education may be the most important smart city service of all, for adults as well as for children. As the world rapidly globalizes, one of the only ways to stay competitive is to develop and continue to build knowledge‐based skills via education. This includes initial knowledge (e.g. through school, vocational and university education) as well as lifelong learning. The role of schools and universities is therefore a key element to consider in the design of smart education solutions. While there are many examples of how ICT can positively impact education, the following figure adapted from Intel47 summarizes some of the key contributions of ICT tools to education. Figure 1 – Potential impact of ICT on education47 Summary of physical and service infrastructures Table 4 provides some examples of the eight physical infrastructure and service elements of a functioning city seen through a “smart” lens. ____________________ 47 http://www.intel.ie/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/flyers/education‐ict‐benefits‐infographic.pdf
