OpenSpace Workshops 66 The Big Question: should there be a mechanism to show the environmental footprint of ICT services and equipment? As ICT adoption becomes ever more pervasive, the resource efficiency of the manufacture of products and services and their life usage has become an increasingly important challenge in the quest for a sustainable society. While many manufacturers are already considering sustainable practice and resource efficiency, consumers have no way of comparing the green credentials of similar products and services. Would consumer pressure force companies into more sustainable practice? What incentives are in place to improve the environmental performance of ICT manufacturers and service providers? Should the public sector work with the industry to introduce a “green label” to enable users to make informed decisions based on environmental criteria? This workshop invites decision makers from ICT manufacturers and service providers to join the debate with policy makers and other key stakeholders who care about a sustainable future. Participants will share knowledge and experience and engage in collective brainstorming on the viability of an internationally recognized label that would drive a more sustainable ICT industry.
