OpenSpace Workshops 65 Mobile for Development The Big Question: how can policy successfully foster the mobile revolution in developing countries? Mobile phone technology has been a prime mover in socio- economic development at a regional, national and international level. The UN Group on the Information Society (UNGIS) is an inter-agency mechanism to coordinate substantive policy issues. As part of their Mobile for Development initiative, this workshop will invite participants to discuss how mobile technology can be used to catalyze and support change in the developing world. How can UN agencies create and develop successful partnerships to maximize the benefits and promote the growth of mobile technology as a key part of development agendas? The workshop invites industry representatives, CEOs and policy makers to join UN agencies to engage in this critical discussion. Participants will leave with insight into the innovative use of mobile technology in local development and learning, and a shared understanding of the potentials of mobile in development. Wednesday 26.10.2011 09:00-10:30 WorkSpace #2 The Big Question: how can mobile devices enhance life-long learning environments? Mobile devices are an integral part of most Japanese students’ lives. The accessibility, connectivity, familiarity and convenience of mobile devices make them ideal for self-regulated learning environments. Recent research with NintendoDS and iPhones shows they are particularly powerful in maximizing learning time as they can be used whenever and wherever the student may want to access educational content, e.g. during commutes. Research also demonstrates that successful self-regulated learning needs initial guidance from teachers. Will the fast evolution of digital technologies and the connected nature of Mobile-Assisted Learning (MAL) mean it will become a main platform for life-long education? What content works best and will drive uptake of MAL? What charging and data roaming models would enable students to use MAL to its full potential? This workshop invites policy makers interested in the use of ICTs in 21st century education, content producers, service providers and operators to explore one of the most important aspects of any national agenda: education. Participants will leave the workshop with an understanding of the research undertaken specifically in Japan, but relevant and transferable to countries across the world.
