58 Co-hosted Workshops The Challenge: What can leaders do to prevent innovators from being killed by their organization? The last ten years has seen a growing body of research into how innovation can be nurtured in the workplace. Organisations are seeking how to embed innovation into their organizational structures as part of their normal business practices. Yet, these efforts can fail as new ideas are typically disruptive to the status quo, and therefore are attacked or even sabotaged by those afraid of change or who see their status threatened. Policy makers and businesses may understand the importance of innovation, but they also need to understand how innovative ideas and practices and the mavericks that seed them in organizations can be supported rather than ostracized. In other words, what can leaders do to ensure innovators aren’t killed by organizational cultures? The workshop invites business and policy leaders who have experienced the pitfalls of attempting to bring innovation into an organisation, young innovators and high-level policy makers trying to promote innovation as part of their national development agendas. Participants will leave the workshop with a clearer understanding of best innovation practice in large organizations. Thursday 27.10.2011 11:00-12:30 LabSpace #2 Open Innovation Workshop #2 Co-hosted Workshop The Challenge: Innovation for Development – and how ICTs can help? We can sum up the goal of innovation for development as discovering new ways of creating opportunity for those in developing countries to meet their aspirations for a better life. How can ICTs be best used to foster innovation for development? Innovation rarely comes in big leaps – it takes the form of what Steven Berlin Johnson calls ‘slow hunches’ – small tweaks and refinements to what already exists. That’s why virtually every new idea or advancement often has several originators – the time and conditions for emergence were just ripe. What are some of the big ideas in the innovation field currently being discussed that are perhaps “ripe for emergence” and how can we use ICTs to apply them to development challenges? The workshop invites business, young innovators and high-level policy makers who are interested in how ICTs can be best used for development and understanding the role of ICTs in national development agendas. Participants will leave the workshop with a clearer understanding of the role of ICTs in development. Thursday 27.10.2011 09:00-10:30 LabSpace #2 Open Innovation Workshop #1 Co-hosted Workshop
