Forum 20 Digital Villages: Rethinking “Bridging the Digital Divide” Identity Management Tuesday 25.10.2011 10:30-11:30 LabSpace #2 Tuesday 25.10.2011 09:00-10:00 LabSpace #2 Today, every networked citizen accesses a host of different ICT systems in a myriad of different contexts: as an employee, consumer, partner, seller or producer. Across today’s complicated networked systems, the challenge persists to differentiate between authorized system users and impersonators attempting to gain access privileges. The race is also on to associate different online identities belonging to the same user to build integrated identities – for example, linking up different social media platforms to build a united or common online profile with a single log-on or access platform. However, the use of integrated identities could carry greater risks of abuse or data and security violations. Robust trusted systems are necessary to guarantee security for accurate billing and safe transactions. Effective authentication systems include traditional IDs and passwords, digital certificates, smart cards and, more recently, biometrics. How can we move towards a more secure connected world, and what are the key hot topics in identity management? This workshop listens to leading experts as we find out more about what’s at stake. Building digital villages or completely bridging the digital divide has alluded so many governments and operators over the years. Yet digital villages are a key component to building Smart Sustainable Villages, which can build Sustainable Cities. Part of this has been the lack of considering the energy divide issue (1.6 billion people lack access to electricity just as 1.4 billion lack access to telecom-clear link), the use of Green ICT (energy efficiency and green power) as well as looking at innovative business models to deploy services to rural and remote areas. Green ICT today is the “missing link” to bridging the digital divide. This session will re-examine business models and technologies to help build Digital Villages, and examine if this is the responsibility of government, private sector or NGOs to bridge the digital divide using Green ICT?
