October 08 Thursday ICTs and climate change 14:30 – 16:00 Session GREEN.4 Room E Thinking green: policy and practices for ICT innovation By some accounts, ICT contributes around 2-3% of total global carbon dioxide emissions – equivalent to that of the aviation industry. Yet ICTs can help reduce the carbon emissions of other industries by far more, both in greater energy-efficiency in operations or in the direct substitution of services (e.g. teleconferencing can replace business travel). How can governments help businesses take a longer term view towards Green ICT? How can renewable energy sources be made more cost-effective? The right policies and practices can enhance the business case to go Green for the ICT industry. This Session explores innovative policies and incentive structures to promote the use of greener technologies. KEY QUESTIONS: – Is there a clear business case to go green or should governments step in to help businesses go green? – Which incentive structures can help promote the use of greener technologies? – Can government policy help lead the way for green innovation in ICTs?
