October 07 Wednesday ICTs and climate change 13:00 –14:00 Session GREEN.2 Room E Green ICT practices: going beyond corporate social responsibility Many companies already recognize that going Green is not just a “nice to do” or “must do” under the auspices of corporate social responsibility. Many organizations have taken it out of CSR and incorporated cross-cutting measures. It is the easiest and quickest thing companies can to do reduce OPEX. Innovative techniques such as water cooling, passive cooling, flywheel storage, virtualization of servers and data centres, can reduce OPEX considerably. Yet, these are still early days for clear best practices and it is important to create a platform for debate and dialogue. KEY QUESTIONS: – Can we break the old linear models of production, consumption and waste and build new models on recycling ? – What are the current best practices for greening ICT products, production, consumption and waste along a company’s entire supply chains? – What other steps can help reduce capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operational expenditure (OPEX) for businesses? – How can ICT help reduce the carbon footprints of companies?
