October 06 Tuesday 11:00 – 12:30 Session GREEN.1 Room C Green@ict: A digital new deal In today’s economic crisis, green ICT is a vital tool for greening other industries, responding to climate change and promoting economic sustainability. Many economic stimulus plans are promoting green technologies and the development of smart cities, smart grids and funding green R&D. Green technologies will enable us to use less energy, store more energy, monitor climate change, buy and sell renewable sources of energy. However, major obstacles remain across the separate industries with different modus operandi and regulatory bodies. The financial crisis may also force companies to avoid the long-term view and slash R&D budgets, as they focus on short-term survival. KEY QUESTIONS: – Do green ICT and other green technologies offer us fresh ways to alleviate climate change and emerge from recession? – How can upgrades to the Energy Grid and broadband networks be coordinated? -Should the role of ICT in combating climate change be central in the upcoming UN Copenhagen conference in December 2009 as follow-up to the Kyoto Climate change meeting?
