M-Tambula Convenient access to public services in Uganda such as health care, security, transport and education is currently an ongoing challenge. This is mainly because many people lack information about the location of these services, the means of accessing the facilities or the ability to contact the service suppliers. M-Tambula is a concept that is focused on bringing services closer to people. An M-Tambula user dials an allocated number, and receives information relayed to them through an Interactive Voice Response (IVR) service (coupled with geo-location). The system can also automatically forward the call to the contact person at the desired facility. The IVR system targets vulnerable categories of people such as the elderly and the disabled. However, the system can be accessed and used by anyone with access to a phone and is particularly critical in times of emergency. What? An IVR-based system providing key information on public services and providers. Who? Helping the elderly and vulnerable groups to access public services. Why? Easy to use by anyone with access to a mobile phone, literate or not. Goals To gain mentorship, possible funding, network with the world’s top ICT individuals and roll out this project by end of 2014. Brenda Katwesigye I hold a BSc in Telecommunications Engineering from Makerere University. I am driven by the desire to transform my community and to be a leading female voice in ICT in Uganda. As a final year project at university, I designed a USSD based product authentication system for medical products in Uganda, a system that is soon to be implemented. Over the years, I have acquired knowledge in telecommunications, VAS, USSD, RAN, HTML, VoIP, MySQL, 2G, 3G, Wifi, Wimax, and computer graphics. I am currently a student member of the Uganda Institute of Professional Engineers. Twitter: MTambulaUG Email: mtambulaug@gmail.com 16 InnovationSpace: Young Innovators
