Mr Seyyed Hossein HASHEMI Member of parliement, Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) ITU can contribute significantly to provide every human being with easy and affordable access to infor-mation In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful Mr. Fernando Borjan, Chairman of the Conference Dr. Hamadoun Toure, Secretary General Excellencies, Dear Colleagues Ladies and Gentlemen, First of all, I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation to the people and Government of Mexico for hosting such an important conference of the ITU and for their kind hospitality. I congratulate you, Mr. Chairman, for your election to lead this conference in this beautiful and historic city of Guadalajara. I also like to welcome Timor Lesse as the one hundred ninety second Member of the Union. The Islamic Republic of Iran, as one of the oldest mem-bers and communication services. In this regard, we fully support ITU-T, ITU-R, and ITU-D’s initiatives to facilitate access to the technical docu-ments and standards of ITU by the universities and research centers in the member countries. We also believe that ITU’s decision to establish and strengthen the ITU regional offices has proved to be a wise decision. At the same time, we welcome further cooperation between ITU and the regional telecom-munication organizations such as the Asia Pacific Telecommunity (APT). We are of the opinion that such liaisons are beneficial to both sides. For example, hold-ing of the preparatory meetings at the regional level prior to the important world conferences and meet-ings of ITU is quite useful for all members of the region and particularly for the developing countries. In the Islamic Republic of Iran, we are fortunate to ben-efit from a high percentage of young, active and edu-cated individuals who have contributed significantly in of the International Telecommunications Union, development of the software as well as the hardware information and communication products not only for the domestic applications but also with the potential of export to other countries of the region. Establishment of the Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) and cyber security, a national approach for the Information Security Management System (ISMS), and provision of e-commerce services throughout the country are only some examples of such developments in recent years. The extensive use of internet services and ICT-related technologies have provided excellent employment op-portunities believes in a very high and significant role for the ITU as the leading United Nations agency for information and communication technology. ITU, for more than 145 years, has worked very hard in bringing the hearts and minds of the people of the world closer together through equitable use of the frequency spectrum and the satellite orbits. It has also helped the developing countries to enhance their tel-ecommunication infrastructure and services in order to overcome and bridge the digital divide. I would like to thank ITU, and the Secretary General in particular, for working hard in achieving the ob-jectives for the young generation in the country. of the Union and for taking a leading role in projects and initiatives such as “Connect the World” and “Connect a School, Connect a Community”.
