Practical information and other meeting details are in Attachment 3. We are looking forward to meeting with you in Eibsee. Sincerely yours, Sakae OKUBO Dale SKRAN --------------------------< Attachment 1 >-------------------------- Logistic information ITU-T SG15 Q.2&3/15 Rapporteur Meeting, 1996-09-24/27 Hosted by Siemens AG, Munich, Bavaria, Germany Organized by Siemens AG, Munich, Bavaria, Germany MEETING LOCATION Eibsee-Hotel Grainau-Eibsee D-82491, Bavaria, Germany Tel:+49 8821 8081 Fax: +49 8821 82585 HOTEL We have done block reservation with conference arrangement for 40 persons with the Eibsee-Hotel in Grainau-Eibsee (see address above). Please contact the hotel directly to book your room and use hotel reservation form. It is very important that you make your hotel reservation as soon as possible, but no later than Sept. 1, 1996. Please note that Eibsee is one of the most frequently traveled places in Germany and the hotel cannot hold the rooms after Sept. 1. Please also note that there are no other hotels close by. So if you do not book immediately, you will not get a room. Please also note, that the time of the meeting coincidents with the Oktoberfest in Munich, when it is impossible to get rooms not only in Munich, but also up to 100 km around it (maybe you will find an empty beer- barrel, but that is the maximum). To get a guaranteed reservation, you should send your credit card number to the hotel. For Òno show Ò at the arrival date, the hotel must charge you 100 DM. Check-in time: after 15:00. Check-out time: 11:00. Other times should be discussed with the hotel directly. Rate: 215.- DM (single) (USD 1 = DM 1,50) 172.50 DM (double meeting participants occupancy, per person) The 215 DM includes breakfast, business-lunch, dinner, mineral or normal water at meals, plus tea/coffee at coffee breaks (morning/afternoon) and also the meeting facilities. Please also note that if less than 15 people show up, which up to now has never happened, the fee goes up to 240,-- DM. So, please register ASAP. For accompanying persons (spouse, family, friends, etc.) the hotel charges 50 DM/night; including breakfast only. Please also note that the area is full of tourist attractions and the hotel is glad to assist in making any sightseeing arrangements. The conference arrangement starts with the dinner at the night of your arrival and ends with the lunch of the last meeting day. Please, also note that we have to collect a meeting cost sharing fee of 35 DM/day/person (e.g. to cover the cost for the copying machine) that the meeting host collect at the meeting and will give you invoices. Please bring cash, that we can handle easily. This unusual arrangement is due to the fact that unfortunately the meeting was set up rather urgently (harmonization with the Q.10/SG8 (the T.120 Group), that will meet the following week in Ismaning, Munich) and so it could not be budgeted for this year in advance by the host. TRAVEL INFORMATION Munich Airport The Munich Franz Joseph Strauss Airport (MUC) is located about 30 km from north of the city center. It can be reached directly from overseas (USA, Japan). The airport is about 40 minutes from the Munich city center. Munich Airport -> Eibsee a) Rental cars This is an interesting alternative for traveling, if you have a economic package for a weekly unlimited mileage with one of the major rental car companies. All major rental car companies are at the airport. You can get good rates especially if you are booking from overseas in your home country. Make sure that you have good road maps before traveling. It is not easy to cross the town or drive around it. From the airport you need about 1.5 - 2 hours to Garmisch/Eibsee. This might vary depending on the road and traffic conditions. Especially around Munich, it is tricky and also at the end of the motorway before Garmisch, traffic jams are very often. >From the airport you basically drive south to Munich and get to A95, that the motorway from Munich to Garmisch. It is on the opposite side of the town, so there are no really good alternatives to get there. Follow the signs that show the ÒAutobahn GarmischÓ and to ÒA95Ó. In Garmisch-Partenkirchen before entering the town, you follow the signs (not very big ones) to Grainau (Route 23) and Eibsee. Eibsee is about 15-20 minutes driving from Garmisch. First you will cross the centre of Garmisch and then continue to Grainau and Fernpass. If you get lost, you should ask for the Zugspitze, the highest mountain in Germany. Eibsee is just about at the foot of Zugspitze, where both the train and cable car leave for the Zugspitze. So if you find yourself on a flat land and do not find a massive wall of mountain in view, you are lost. At Eibsee (end of the road, large parking lot and right side) you should look for the hotel, that is the only hotel at the lake shore. It is easy to find. As a hotel guest you can park in the hotel parking area, free of charge. b) Train Trains go from Munich airport to the City Center (S8) every 20 minutes, the ride takes 40 minutes (until station Hauptbahnhof). There is only one type of train so you cannot be wrong. You take a ticket from the machines to the Munich train stations (Hauptbahnhof or Pasing) (about 10 DM) and get the rest of your tickets from Munich to Garmisch and Eibsee there (cost about 30-40 DM). The best is if you arrive during normal working hours to get a direct ticket at the airport straight to Garmisch. The German Rail (DB) has a sales booth close to the entrance of the S-Bahn S8. From the Airport you take S8 to the Main Station (Hauptbahnhof) or Pasing Station (it is easier to change there). From there you take the train to Garmisch. They go about one per hour. The ride takes you 2 hours. >From Garmisch to Eibsee you can take either a taxi or get on a the Eibsee-bus (a blue buss opposite and left to the entrance of the Garmisch station, they go until 18.00 hours max.). If you take a mountain-train, which you also can do during the day, namely to Grainau, Eibsee and the Zugspitze, make sure to leave the train at Eibsee, or else you will find yourself after a while at the top of Zugspitze. From the station in Eibsee, the hotel is about 5 minutes walking distance. If you take from Garmisch the local bus (the blue Eibsee-bus) that runs from the opposite side from the Garmisch station about every half an hour. You can also take a taxi from the Garmisch station to the Eibsee hotel, that will come to about 30 DM. c) Taxi Taxi from the Munich Airport is not recommended because it is very- very expensive. To Munich itself it costs about 130 DM. From Munich to Eibsee will be even more. TIME AND WEATHER Local time is GMT+1. September is the start of Fall, but usually you have fine weather around the Oktoberfest. Days can be pleasantly warm but nights are usually cool. However, you should be prepared for rain showers. Daily temperatures are around 15-20 C but can range also from 10 to 25 C (sometimes). Eibsee is at 1000m elevation (you will feel it), so you should be prepared for an Alpine climate. You can have very nice days, but also rain and cold. If we are very unlucky, even the first snow. CURRENCY Currency is German Mark (DM). This is the only currency accepted. The current exchange rate is about USD 1 = 1,50 DM, but it fluctuates each day.. All major credit cards are widely accepted by hotels, shops and restaurants. SOCIAL All meals are part of the hotel arrangement. At this time we are planning to have one Dinner (probably Wednesday) in a typical alpine lodge. The hotel has also excellent recreation facilities at no additional costs, such as a pool, a sauna, fitness room, tennis, you can swim in the lake, jog around the lake (8 km), or go to the Zugspitze for skiing. This all sounds very exiting, but in practice you will not have any time because of Mr. Okubo/SkranÕs busy meeting schedule. All shops are open during the week daily 9:00-18:30. On Saturday between 9:00-14:00. On Sunday shops are closed. TELEPHONE, E-MAIL Unfortunately, this is expensive. For e-mail connection they have one analog line in the entire hotel and it is very expensive. The other lines in the room are ISDN-like PBX lines, that is good for talking, but not for data communication. They are also expensive. For talking if you have AT&T, MCI and Spring cards that is fine you can dial a toll free number. So, my recommendation is forget your e- mail for a week. For the following week, the SG8/Q.10 meeting this problem will not exist, I guess. For this day, it is also expected that EWOS delegates will present their new work item on T.120 profiles. Detailed agenda will be sent directly by the relevant rapporteurs. Q.2&3/15 have shown interest that some of them will participate in the first two days of the Ismaning meeting. The meeting will take place in a training centre of Deutsche Telekom. This implies that hotel facilities are included in the training center and are offered on a rather cheap price, for about DM 90,- per night, breakfast included. It is strongly recommended to make use of this offer, as otherwise people will get problems to find a hotel, as "Oktoberfest" is partially overlapping with the meeting. There is also the option to book lunch in the meeting place. I assume that dinner is not requested, as people probably prefer to visit Munich on their own. Attached you find more details about the meeting place and how to reach it. Please make your reservation to the attention of Mrs. Kroll directly not later than September 6. Otherwise room allocation cannot be guaranteed. Weather conditions: September is the start of Fall, but usually you have fine weather around the Oktoberfest. Days can be pleasantly warm but nights are usually cool. However, you should be prepared for rain showers. Daily temperatures are around 15-20 degrees Centigrade (sometimes).
