2021 Virtual Consultation of Councillors – Snapshot Report<\/h2>\n<\/div>

8 to 18 June 2021: <\/strong>The COVID-19 crisis has highlighted the critical role of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the continued functioning of societies. ITU Members have stepped up and engaged in activities that have proven essential in saving lives and keeping economies going. ITU has been helping countries fully utilize digital technologies to respond to and recover from COVID\u201119, and to build preparedness for similar future global emergencies. Now more than ever, the world needs to be able to rely on ICTs and ITU\u2019s leadership in promoting universal, secure, reliable, and affordable connectivity.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Despite the ongoing COVID\u201119 pandemic, the Virtual Consultation of Councillors has allowed ITU Member States to progress on all of the items initially included on the agenda of the annual 2021 physical session of the ITU Council.<\/p>\n<\/div> <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n\n

Almost half of the world\u2019s population is still unconnected. There is a false perception that the information and communication technology industry, unlike other industries, has been doing quite well in this pandemic \u2013 that we do not need to worry about ICT development. If we do not change this mindset, bringing the other half of the world online by 2030 will be very difficult. We need to use this moment to encourage investments in ICT.<\/blockquote>\n

Sixth World Telecommunication\/ICT Policy Forum (WTPF-21)<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n\n
\n

Councillors addressed the question of  WTPF-21, scheduled to take place in Geneva from 16 to 18 December 2021. They heard from the chairman of the informal expert group on the progress being made towards finalizing the set of draft Opinions that will be presented to the Forum for discussion. The draft Opinions revolve around mobilizing new and emerging telecommunications\/ICTs for sustainable development.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n
