Digital to provide messaging service at TELECOM 95

Geneva, 25 September 1995 — Digital Equipment Corporation will once again provide the systems and software for the Global Messaging Service at TELECOM 95. The service will benefit over 5000 expected users in TELECOM 95's Press Room, Press Centre, conference facilities and exhibit halls. Available to exhibitors, FORUM participants, VIPs and some 2500 journalists, the Messaging Service will provide simple to use worldwide connectivity to electronic communications systems ranging from fax and pagers to Internet and X.400 mail, the TELECOM 95 WorldWide Web, TelNet and FTP as well as traditional services. The power, interoperability and ease of management of Digital's high-speed Alpha mail server will ensure the efficient exchange of information.

Digital will supply, install and integrate personal computers, associated servers and local area network equipment as well as the base software and messaging application programmes for the Global Messaging Service. Swiss Telecom/Unisource will contribute free local and international messaging facilities via X.400 electronic mail and gateways to fax, telex, pagers and the Internet. Digital and Swiss Telecom are also providing a laptop dial-up access for messaging from hotels; a dial-out facility for journalists will be available through the Public Switched Telephone Network.

TELECOM'S Press Room will feature Digital PCs with CD-ROMs, network printers and support staff along with laptop hook-up facilities, enabling journalists to communicate with exhibitors, PALEXPO staff and pagers. A WorldWide Web browser and Digital's Teamlinks messaging software will be installed on over 180 Digital Celebris XL PCs running Windows NT at the exhibit. The press will have full Internet access as well as access to X.400 mail, Internet mail, TelNet, the WorldWide Web (including exhibitors' Home Pages, the TELECOM 95 calendar and FORUM Programme, a documentation service, video and still images and audio signals), File Transfer Protocol (to transfer graphics and photographs) and gateways to fax and telex mail. TELECOM'S 140,000 visitors are also encouraged to test drive the Global Messaging Service (also Teamlinks based) on the 150 PCs strategically placed throughout the exhibition area.

The engine behind the service: Alpha; The messaging application: Teamlinks; The computer: Celebris XL. The motor powering Digital's Teamlinks messaging software is Digital's Alpha-based cluster Server running UNIX-based mail services.

The PC of choice, unique in the industry offering traditional Intel-based or high-performance Alpha RISC options - the Digital Celebris XL - delivers enhanced power and performance, both from the hard disk and in video functions.

The messaging interface, Teamlinks Mail for Microsoft Windows is a powerful graphical messaging tool permitting users to integrate typical desk-top applications such as Microsoft, Lotus and WordPerfect - as well as modern multimedia applications - with global messaging software.

Portable and remote Global Messaging Service access will also be demonstrated at Digital's stand, where a TELECOM 95 account in a notebook, the Digital Hinote Ultra - at four pounds and one inch, the world's lightest and thinnest notebook - will be connected by infra-red technology. Digital's software and hardware integrates complete messaging solutions. Teamlinks, the "client" part of Digital's client/server mail system installed on PCs and Macintoshes, permits users to access mail and filing cabinet services. These "back-end" services will be supplied by DEC Mailworks, providing access to the Internet and X.400 via Digital's MAILBUS 400 message transfer agents. The services will be running on a highly-available cluster of two Alpha servers with Digital UNIX.

Digital Equipment Corporation is the world's leader in open client/server solutions from personal computing to integrated worldwide information systems. Digital's scalable Alpha platforms, storage, networking, software and services, together with industry-focused solutions from business partners, help organisations compete and win in today's global market place.
