Dear WSIS Stakeholders,

The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum 2021 was organised virtually under the theme of ICTs for Inclusive, Resilient and Sustainable Societies and Economies (WSIS Action Lines for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals). The Forum started on 26 January onwards and concluded in a final week from 17 to 21 May 2021, which provided an open and inclusive space for all in harnessing the potential of ICTs and accelerating the achievement of the SDGs through the implementation of the WSIS Action Lines.

Over the course of seventeen weeks, the WSIS Forum 2021 welcomed more than 150 high-level participants and hosted more than 250 sessions, including workshops, live interviews, WSIS TalkX, the high-level track, Hackathon, WSIS Prizes and many more with a cumulative attendance of over 50,000 participants joining from over 185 countries around the world.

Announcements made by WSIS Stakeholders during WSIS Forum 2021 for
WSIS Forum 2022
(30 May - 3 June)
 
  • ICTs and Older Persons special track and WSIS Healthy Ageing Innovation Prize will be continued, including strengthening linkages of the WSIS Forum with the Silver Economy Forum in collaboration with the GCOA.
  • UNESCO and ITU WSIS Team will jointly organise a Hackathon, a WSIS Special Prize and a special track on ICTs and Indigenous Peoples and Cultures to be launched at the WSIS Forum 2022.
  • Geneva Cities Hub expressed appreciation for the Mayor’s session at the WSIS Forum 2021 and announced strengthened partnership with a Mayors round table in 2022 focussing on Smart Cities for achieving the SDGs.
  • WSIS Forum 2022 will enhance cross-sectoral participation of Ministers, Private Sector, Academia and Civil Society in areas such as health, education, trade, culture and so on.
  • Continuation of Facebook Live interviews with WSIS stakeholders.
  • Publication of country and region specific WSIS Stocktaking Reports.
 
  • Commitment to strengthening the equal gender participation at the WSIS Forum and the WSIS process.
  • Elevate WSIS visibility in global processes, particularly in New York.
  • ITU/WSIS team will work in collaboration with ESCWA and UN ITU Regional Office towards the WSIS Regional Arab Forum.
  • Commitment to strengthening the WSIS Accessibility group and identifying main opportunity and challenges.
  • Engagement with the WSIS Youth Campaigner to strengthening the implementation of the WSIS and SDGs processes.
  • Continuation of the special tracks at the WSIS Forum 2022:

    • ICT and Older Persons
    • ICTs and Youth ICTs and Gender Mainstreaming.
    • ICTs and Accessibility for Persons with Disabilities and Specific Needs
    • Cybersecurity
    • ICTs for Well-being and Happiness.

AI for Good is opening our virtual doors to an extraordinary session on Accelerating Climate Science with AI hosted on 7 July, 12:30 – 14:00 CEST (Geneva time), featuring the following stellar speakers:

This kick-off event will set the stage for a series of AI for Good Discovery talks over the following months which will bring together leading voices to ensure climate science is able to capitalize on the latest advances in AI and machine learning for the benefit of humanity.

WSIS/UNGIS SIDE EVENT AT HIGH-LEVEL POLITICAL FORUM (HLPF) 2021
 
 
 

WSIS/UNGIS and the Russian Federation (WSIS Forum 2021 Chair), will jointly organise a side event "ICTs for Inclusive, Resilient and Sustainable Societies and Economies (WSIS Cooperation for Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals)" at the HLPF 2021. This session will focus on how ICTs and the WSIS Action Lines can help accelerate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), learning from the COVID-19 experience to build more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable societies and economies and to strengthen partnerships and digital cooperation towards achieving the goals and targets across the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In addition, all WSIS stakeholders will have the opportunity to share their efforts, experiences, and contributions to the WSIS process.
