Information about the project
English Program
English is Paper Airplanes' largest program. Tutors and learners in our English program connect over Skype, Google Hangouts, or WhatsApp to meet for 1.5 hours each week during the 16 week session. Using these existing ICTs allows Paper Airplanes to provide free access to education in active and post-conflict zones where educational infrastructure has been compromised or destroyed. Pairs follow a four-leveled trauma-informed curriculum requiring them to write CVs and personal statements to encourage professional development, and we provide access to test-specific resources to provide more specific support for those who request it. At the end of the course, up to ten learners are selected for an English exam scholarship, which covers test and travel costs for students taking the IELTS, TOEFL, or other internationally recognized English exams. A university toolkit with resources for student organizations who volunteer with us is being created. This toolkit will include ideas for on-campus speakers and event, mental health resources for tutors, and tutor recruitment resources.
