NEU PC Plus Programme
Description *
As Singapore journeys toward the Smart Nation vision, it is important that we leave no one behind in the opportunities afforded by technology. NEU PC Plus Programme (NPP) aims to bridge the digital divide between the haves and have-nots. It is the only national programme which provides financial assistance for subsidised PCs and free broadband connectivity to full-time students and persons with disabilities (PWDs) from low-income households. With NPP, these beneficiaries are given equal access to resources and opportunities as their peers; empowered for independent learning beyond the boundaries of school; and enjoy the benefits of convenience and connectivity in their daily lives. To instill a sense of ownership, applicants have to make a small co-payment for the PC-Bundle. However for some applicants, this small co-payment amount remains a barrier. Since 2007, iNSPIRE Fund provides a last-mile solution to student applicants who are unable to afford, by allowing them to perform community service in place of the co-payment. This inculcates the spirit of pay-it-forward whereby the beneficiaries not only help themselves but also extend help to others. Since the launch of NPP in November 2006, it has benefited more than 33, 000 low-income households with students or PWDs. One of the key success factors is the close collaboration IMDA has with community partners which provide better reach and effective seamless delivery to the beneficiaries for lower operational cost, so that NPP can benefit more beneficiaries and no one is at a disadvantage in their lifelong learning journey and daily living.
